Remembering abolition activist Karla Gray, Montana’s first female chief justice

It is with great sadness that we learn of Karla Gray’s passing. The Honorable Karla Gray, the first female Chief Justice in Montana, was admired by many including the Montana Abolition Coalition. Justice Gray was the first judge in Montana to talk about what it was truly like to be part of the system that puts people to death, sharing the emotional toll it took on her. She taught us that we aspire to end the death penalty for victims of crime but also to not create more victims from the people that serve the state and who must carry out the execution. We will miss her strong voice calling for abolition and we carry on this work in her name. Our condolences to her friends and family. Rest in Peace, Chief Justice Gray.
