Another botched execution amidst a shroud of secrecy

On July 23rd, Arizona executed Joseph Wood even though the source and dosage of the drugs to be used was kept secret. The lack of government transparency in a process as serious as life and death has led to a number of botched executions, and this one would be no exception.

Ninety minutes after the execution began, Wood was still alive, and, in the words of one witness, gasping “like a fish on shore gulping for air.” He was finally pronounced dead almost two hours after the execution started.
