2017 Legislative Session

On February 2nd, 2017, Rep. Adam Hertz (R-Missoula) introduced House Bill 366. HB366 was co-sponsored by: Sen. Albert Olzewski (R-Kalispell), Sen. Tom Facey (D-Missoula), Sen. Margie MacDonald (D-Billings), Rep. Adam Rosendale (R-Billings), Rep. Mike Hopkins (R- Missoula), and Sen. Doug Kary (R-Billings).

The bill was heard by the House Judiciary Committee on February 6th. Video recording of the hearing can be found HERE. The bill was supported by numerous proponents, including murder victim family members, faith leaders, conservative leaders, exonorees, and members of law enforcement. The bill did not have single opponent.

Following the hearing, Montana Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty held a media conference with several Republican lawmakers.

Despite the obvious support for House Bill 366 in the greater legislative body, the House Judiciary Committee voted to table the measure on a 10 to 9 vote on February 10th, 2017.
